Lewes to Newhaven Raft Race 2010
The weather could not have been better (temperatures reaching 30c) on Sunday 27th June 2010 as the Newick Bonfire Raft known as The Plotter took to the waters of the River Ouse for the third time in the annual Lewes to Newhaven Raft Race organised by the Lewes Round Table.
After being bombarded with eggs and water from not only the 9 other rafts taking part but the spectators on the river banks near the Lewes Yacht Club the team weaved their way to the start line and began the task of paddling (as fast as possible!!) to Newhaven Marina.
Apart from an egg and water fight half way along with another raft (who had a motor on board and still the team managed to over take!!) the raft and crew remained fairly unscathed.
Southease Bridge was a dissappointment this year due to the replacement bridge being meshed. This put paid to the spectators efforts to cover the team in water, eggs, flour and other concoctions.
The team had one last frantic paddle over the finish line resulting in achieving a WINNING time of 2 hours and 8 minutes only 2 minutes faster than 2nd place!! The team celebrated their victory by enjoying a doughnut and a few well deserved drinks!!
This year's team consisted of Jonathan Wilkins, Katherine Duncton, Paul Sutton, Gavin Holman, Nikki and Mark. The team wish to thank all those who sponsored them and raised much needed funds for the RNLI, also a big thank you to Martin Benson for his help with transporting the raft.
